Ashley and Atuthai's wedding was all about the ocean. They said their vows on the sand at Colonnades Beach on Phillip Island, about two hours from Melbourne, where the sandstone cliffs, the timber beach stairs and the soft sea haze did half the work for us.

They wore cream and white, which sat beautifully against the sand and the blue water, so I kept the edit light and natural. A few frames stayed black and white, where the moment mattered more than the colour: hands held a little longer, a quiet look on the stairs. The rest was simple. Walking the shoreline, laughing into the wind, and golden light coming in low across the water as the sun went down.

Planning a beach wedding? On Phillip Island, the Mornington Peninsula or the Great Ocean Road, keep your portraits for the last hour of light, when the sun is soft and the beach is quiet. And bring a second pair of shoes for the sand.
